Parents Just Don’t Understand: #197

Do your parents not understand technology? Do they ask you stupid questions? Do they send you absurd text messages? If you’ve got an example of your “Parents Just Don’t Understanding”, submit it here!
And thank God we’ll never be as dumb as they are!

My stepmother signs all of her Facebook messages with “Toodles”. Even comments. Even her status updates.

I like to imagine she immediately leaves the room after posting anything.

About two years ago, my mum discovered how to play solitaire on the computer. About two weeks ago she discovered how to play music on the computer. Today in total amazement she told me she could play solitare and listen to music at the same time.

Back in high school one part of my history 30 assignment was to create several WWII period propaganda posters; naturally I saw this as a chance to show off my Photoshop skills. I spent weeks pulling pieces from actual posters of the time and blending them with my own original artwork I made with my tablet. I even had it printed on 3 food wide paper and spent time artificially ‘aging’ it with coffee stains, tears, burns etc.Two days after the last class I found out I got 60%. Apparently the teacher didn’t believe I could make something so realistic myself, she thought I just printed out pictures I found on Google. Most of the other students made theirs using magazine clippings and pencil crayons…

My mother gets around 100 new emails on a typical day. One day I told her to open the email I’d sent her about a week before. As I watched, she began scrolling through her inbox, complaining about how tedious it always was to find old emails. I asked her why she didn’t just search for it. Turns out, my mother has used the same email for upwards of a decade and can forward messages or attach files with the best of them, but she’d never once noticed that her email had a search function.

I used to work at a video game store. Between serving the tween geeks desperate to talk to someone about the obscure game they liked, I had to serve the parents who actually forked over the cash. Around holiday time many would come and buy systems for their kids. This was before Internal memory in the ps2 / game cube age. Parents constantly would come and buy the system and a popular game such as final fantasy. When I suggested the memory card they would look at my like I was crazy. “Why would anyone want to save their game?” Okay, fair enough, see you again December 26th!

My dad asked me to lend him my laptop to check his e-mail, he isn’t very quick doing this so I went to read something while he finished, as soon as I sat with the book in my hands he yells “Son, this just broke, the computer is doing whatever it wants”, turns out he had left his thumb hanging over the touch pad and opened VLC from the rocket dock… twice.

One day I was showing my grandmother Youtube since she had never heard of it before. I played the ok go treadmill video for her and no matter how many times I explained it, she kept saying, “you and your friends need to be more careful when you’re filming all these videos”. She thought every video on Youtube was a home movie I made.

The Dorklyst: The 6 Things Every Great Rockstar Game Does Wrong

by admin ·

Let’s get one thing out of the way first: Rockstar makes awesome games. But when a company has such a high pedigree, sometimes we can be blinded to the things they don’t do so well. Here’s our list of the six things Rockstar’s most-amazing games still need to work on.

6. Commitment to Realism Over Fun

In real life, you’re not suppose camp within 100 feet of a trail. You’re not supposed set up your tent on top of living plants, and it’s in your best interest to sleep on a level surface. I understand why all of those things are important in real life. I don’t understand why they’re enforced before you can quick travel in Red Dead Redemption.

Rockstar games are usually referred to as sandbox games. I’d say they’re closer to playgrounds. The insane level of realism creates a miniature version of reality to play in. They do a great job. It’s why driving on the sidewalk in GTA is so fun. Sometimes, though, they get carried away. At some point realism gets too close to reality, which is boring.

Here is a small sample of things I don’t enjoy doing in real life, let alone in a videogame: getting tired after running a short distance, going to a store and finding out it’s closed, delivering pizzas, working out. If I thought working out was fun, I wouldn’t be playing a videogame.

Shark Boy Interview (Wrestler)

by admin ·

Exclusive Shark Boy Interview:
by Johnny B. Molestar

From the depths of the ocean and appearing in professional wrestling rings across the land, we are here to interview Shark Boy ?.

So how did you come up with the Shark Boy gimmick?  Are there any plans to tag with John ?Shark? Tenta or the Lobsterman?

The whole thing was originally inspired by a song and promoter Ian Rotten helped put the finishing touch on the name.  My brother and I designed the look of the character.  With regard to the second question, I’ve had plenty of unusual partners in the past, so nothing would surprise me.

How about a Shark Girl?  Are there any plans for the wife or girlfriend to accompany you to the ring?

No, not right now.  There was a “Shark Girl” character briefly, but nothing long-term.  I think it would be fun to do that angle at some point when the time is right.

When I see you on TNA, they sometimes announce your schools of fans.  Who came up with that?  It?s great.

I’m not sure, but I think maybe Scott Hudson came up with that when I was in WCW.  I agree with you, it’s great.

It sounds like Hudson.  You?ve wrestled in a lot of organizations, which one have you liked the most?

I’m having so much fun with TNA right now, so I would have to say them.  I also really enjoy performing in front of friends and family at Buckeye Pro Wrestling events in Ohio.

How would you compare XPW and ECW?

I never worked for ECW, but the fans in XPW were great to me.  They got with my character right away in both Philadelphia and Los Angleles.  I’m not really an “extreme” wrestler, but the character is so unique that the fans were really able to connect with it.

In my last few wrestling interviews, nobody commented on Rob Black because they were all suing him.  How was it to work with him?

He was always very professional to me and I have nothing bad to say about him personally.

And how would you compare Rob Black and Paul Heyman?

Both had a vision and ideas about taking the wrestling product to “the next level”.  I think the biggest difference is that Heyman has a much stronger concept of “wrestling” while Black’s specialty seemed to be shocking people.

Speaking of shocking, what do you think of hardcore wrestling?

I’m not a huge fan of it personally, but I understand its place in the industry.

Were you a backyard wrestler as a youngster?

Yeah, I guess you could say that.  We never did anything “extreme” or “hardcore”.  We just had fun.

Have you ever played the game titled Backyard Wrestling?  I am sure many fans would like to see your character on there.

I haven’t had the chance to yet, but I know I will at some point.  It will be great to finally see my character on a video game someday.

You?ve worked with WCW and XPW? all of those companies were ill-fated.  Do you see that sort of future for TNA?

I think big things are still to come for TNA.

You don?t think you jinxed those other companies, do you?

Lol, I hope not.

I?ve seen some photos with you and Shane Helms.  Are you two friends?  I would love to see a big push for a ?Super Friends? group in the WWE.

Yes, we are good friends, and I too would love to see he and Rosey get a great big push.

Joe Gibson Interview (Wrestler)

by admin ·

AfroSquad Exclusive Interview:
Brutal Joe Gibson, Ultimate Wrestler

Joe GibsonJoe, how are you doing today?
I’m doing alright today. Thanks for asking!

So how long have you been in wrestling and who trained you?
Including training I’ve been in wrestling for around 3 years now. I started in Virginia for a year under the training of Sean Denny, then later moved down here to the Gulf Coast area and trained under the watchful eye of Percy Pringle III (WWE’s Paul Bearer). Once I was at his school the three trainers there ( Aeon Flexx, Ricky Roberts, and Jester McKain) showed me most of what I know today.

What is the history between you and DJ Pringle?
When I moved down here, I met him at the school in Mobile. We were first billed as a tag team since we took to one another being two of the biggest guys training there. After some time though we went our separate ways, and for the longest time we never could see eye to eye on anything. He pulled some stunts in my personal life which then was settled in a feud we had here recently. Since then our friendship has been pretty strong.

Where all have you wrestled in the past?
Well, I’m still pretty new to the game so my travels haven’t really been that far away yet. I’ve wrestled in Mobile, Loxley, Pensacola, Mossy Head, Panama City, Natchez, and Biloxi. I hope one day to make it to Europe or the big chance at wrestling in Japan!!

Can you tell us about any merchandise you sell at shows?
Well here recently I just had some Tshirts made which will be available for purchase at the Ultimate Wrestling event this Saturday June 7th. Before that I always stopped to take free photos with my fans.

Can you tell us a little about the Hellfire club?
The Hellfire Club has been in Pensacola for a long time. It dates all the way back to the PWA (Pensacola Wrestling Alliance). Some of the members were Chad Havok, Monty Warbucks, and of course Red Andersen. I received a call from Red Andersen just under a year ago asking if I would be interested in coming to Ultimate Wrestling and joining the Hellfire Club. He had heard of me breaking Jerry Reiner’s neck and really wanted me to bring some of that raw aggression and use it to benefit the Hellfire Club. I told him I had no problems with that and the rest is history.

So are there a lot of hot wrestling groupies?

Wrestling fans are (due to lack of other words) a cult. I wouldn’t go as far as call them groupies. They know who they like to see and a lot of them travel all around to watch their favorite wrestler do what he does best.

Who are your favorite opponents and why?
Oh God!! I have a few so here they are…..

Jester McKain – He always seem to bring out the best in me and always keeps e thinking in the ring. His psychological game in the ring is unmatched!!

Cameron Frost – He has a lot of influence in the European style of wrestling. So I always look forward to going hold for hold with him.

Colby Godwin – If I ever need to be sore for two weeks after a match I always look for Colby. He and I have crafted an American version of Strong Style wrestling that always gets the crowd going. We literally have so much respect for one another because every time we are in the ring together we always beat the living hell out of each other and come back for more!!!

Can you tell us the story about Jerry Reiner’s neck?
I think it was at an April show in Brewton, Al where he and Kornbred took on Sirus LaVey and Nick Vortex in a tag match. Kornbred gave Vortex a leg drop and actually broke the ring which played a major role later. Sirus and Jerry were in the corner and Jerry throws sirus to the other turnbuckle. When he charged Sirus moved and Jerry tripped over the loose mat from the broken boards and literally FLEW HEAD FIRST into the second turnbuckle. Little did he know that his neck was in a fragile state.

The next month Sirus asked me to do a run in so he could get DQ’d and keep his title. I agreed. I ran in and laid Jerry out with my lariat. That night Jerry had to be rushed to the hospital and the doctors told him his neck was broken from the lariat he took.

What do you think of Invasion Shoot Productions?
I think it has its ups and its downs. Like anything else really. So far its doing pretty well letting people get to know more about their favorite wrestlers. So keep up the good work guys!

Is it true you once choke slammed the SnowMan?
I did!! Snowman can be a little overbearing at times. He’s a very excitable young man who in that particular moment needed to be knocked down a peg or two.

What’s your favorite part about being a wrestler?
I’ve really got to connect with a lot of people who really enjoy what I bring to the table. Wrestling these days isn’t all about the good vs evil anymore. People want to be entertained and see some decent wrestling. I feel that in time I can definitely bring a lot more to these people and continue making my peers and trainers proud of what I’ve become and where I hope to be going one day.

What about Kami Andrews, Mari Possa, Ginger Lynn, or Jasmin St. Clair. We’ve interviewed them. Have you heard of them?
I’ve heard of all three. I’ve had an awkward and lonely adolescent life. You fill in the blanks.

What is your goal in wrestling for one year from now?
Hopefully to be Ultimate Wrestling’s Heavyweight Champ and move on to Europe or Japan.

I’ve heard a lot of people comment on how quickly you’ve become a big name in Gulf Coast wrestling. Why do you think that is?
I’ve heard it too, but I’m my own worst critic. I accept the compliments but I don’t let them get to my head. One thing I was taught was to be professional to everyone inside and outside the locker room.

Can you take a moment to make fun of one of your friends?
I can take a few moments!! If anyone had a chance to see “The Bruiser-Weight” Maze on the local Pensacola show called Yadda Yadda, he is the nicest bad guy ever. Plus he’s only 5’3”. How scary can he be?

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Afro-Squad?
How can I meet Miner 69er?

Come hang out with the Afro-Squad.  She is a regular at the headquarters (AKA White Castle).  Thanks for your time Joe.  Keep up your pimpin’ game, you know you can’t slip!

Mr. Fantasy Interview (Wrestler)

by admin ·

Wrestling Star – Mr. Fantasy

Mr. Fantasy and Sexy Samantha

Mr. Fantasy and Sexy Samantha

Mr. Fantasy, how are you doing today?
I’m doing well. Thanks for asking.

Let’s start with your early career. Who trained you?
I was trained by the Armstrongs. Mainly Steve but Scott and Bob had a hand in it also.

What moves did you learn first?
Just he basic stuff. How to lock up, an arm bar, a hammer lock, a head lock. Like I said just the basic stuff.

What advice have you taken from other wrestlers?
When I 1st started I was given the best advice a young wrestler could be given. I was told to just keep my mouth shut and always listen to what you are told.

What are the biggest names you have wrestled?
I have been lucky enough to be in the ring with some big names. Just to name a few. All the Armstrongs (Bob, Scott, Steve, Brad and Brian-Road Dog), Buff Bagwell, Tommy Rich, I tagged with Dr. Tom Prichard. A few more but that is enough for now.

Who do you enjoy wrestling in the ring?
Heck yeah beats wrestling on the floor. Just kidding. Yeah I enjoy getting in there and mixing it up.

A lot of our fans saw your match with Dan Delicious and Uncle Vinnie. What do you think of that match? We thought your interactions with Dan were quite entertaining.
Thanks, I appreciate that. Dan and I have worked each other a lot and usually have good matches. It is so easy to work with him. He does his thing and you just react. As far as the match goes. I thought it was ok. I mean there is always something that could have been done better but over all it was ok.

Who is Sexy Samantha?
She is my wife. I meet her right after I stared training. For the 1st year I wrestled she just rode with me. I was a good guy and really didn’t need a valet. Ever since then I have been a bad guy and she has been with me.

If you had a televised WWE match, what would you want J.R. to say about you?
I would hope he would say I was entertaining. That I gave my all every time I was out there. Heck, to have JR say anything about you would be an honor.

Do you have any signature moves? If so, can you explain them?
I usually drop an elbow off the top rope to finish my matches. Nothing to special. I do have one move I guess. I place my opponent in a razor edge and then drop them into a diamond cutter.

Are there any wrestlers that you compare yourself to?
Not really. Now I do look up to a couple of wrestlers. Bob Armstrong and Ric Flair. They have had some influance on my career.

As a wrestler, what do you do best?
I would say entertain. When I am out in front of the crowd I do my best to keep them into the match. Wheather I have to tell someone to shut up or tell someone I am going to whip their ass next. Just try to entertain.

What do you think you could improve on to take your game up one step?
There are a couple of things I could improve on. I mean everyone can improve on something. I would say my body and my actual wrestling ability. I never said I was a good technical wrestler.

Is there anything else you would like to talk about today?
I would just like to say thank you to the Armstrongs. They took me in like I was family and that means a lot to me. I would also like to say I am a very blessed man to be able to do this for the last 7 years and say I have given my all every time I was out there.

What do you think of Ultimate Wrestling?
I think it was ok for the 1st show. There are some things I would have done differently but it’s not my show so I just show up do my thing get paid and leave.

What do you think of other wrestling companies in the South?
There are some good ones and some not so good ones. Over all though the good ones out way the bad. I guess here are to many in the Gulf Coast area. Sometimes its seems like some guy run across some many so he goes out and buys a ring and tries to put on a show. Most of the time they have no idea what they are doing and that looks bad on the other organizations that are out there trying to do it the right way.

Thanks for your time.
No problem. Thanks for having me. Take care. Until next time just remember.

I’m not the whole show,
I’m not the big show, but
I am the best damn part of the show.

MLB 11: The Show (PSP)

by admin ·

How badly do you want a roster update? That’s the big question you need to ask yourself when contemplating a purchase of MLB 11: The Show for the PSP. The latest edition of Sony’s baseball simulation adds little to its two most recent predecessors aside from some minor tweaks to gameplay and new Major League rosters for the 2011 season. While this is still the best baseball game out there for a handheld, if you have either last year’s game or the 2009 model, you can skip this year and check back next spring.

MLB 11: The Showscreenshot
AI pitchers are believably imperfect in this year’s game.

With that said, there’s no denying how good MLB 11: The Show is on the diamond. This PSP game includes a lot of the best features of its PlayStation 3 big brother, which has been the best arcade baseball sim for a number of years. Most of the key modes of play are included. The role-playing-like Road to the Show leads the way, letting you create a wannabe slugger or ace and guide him to major league stardom. You can also take control of a team in season play, manage a club from the dugout, play one-off exhibition matches, and crank dingers in the home-run derby. All of the MLB rosters have been given an overhaul to reflect offseason signings, so Carl Crawford is now with the Red Sox, Adam Dunn is with the White Sox, Jayson Werth is with the Nationals, and so on. Online support was strangely pulled from the PSP version of the game after 2009, but you can still play ad hoc games against friends locally. There is also no option for full franchise play controlling a club over multiple seasons, nor are there any training modes to help you with pitching, batting, or fielding. Despite lacking a number of common features, this is a game with a great deal of depth.

Road to the Show is much the same as it was in past years, so plate appearances remain all-or-nothing deals. Fail in your goal, and either you come away with zero training points to be put toward skill improvements or you actually get docked. This system is neither as fair nor as authentic as the PS3 game, which handed out points even for failures. On that platform, for example, batters got rewarded for such things as working the count, hammering the ball deep, or doing just about anything else to keep the opposing hurler on his toes. This system should have been ported over to the PSP.

On the diamond, MLB is as strong as ever. Gameplay basics are similar to those in the past couple of games. Just about every pitch, swing, and fielding attempt plays out exactly as it does in real baseball. The pitcher-batter duel has been tweaked a bit to add even more realism. AI pitchers have more chinks in their armor. Their control isn’t as perfect as it has been in past years, leaving you free to take more pitches and work counts. You absolutely have to take your time in the batter’s box, because if you flail at everything and anything, the pitcher recognizes this and starts throwing balls all over the place. Pitching isn’t quite so lifelike, due to AI batters that all seem to have the eye of Ted Williams. It can be hard to get them to chase anything out of the zone. Strikeouts are more commonplace than before, but you still have to go right across the plate with meatballs far too often to avoid walks.

That giant glove isn’t the only park feature that’s able to catch the ball.
