Apollo Beach Power Plant Manatee Photos

In the winter, you can go to Apollo Beach Florida to see the manatees.  You see, the manatees congregate around the power plant to bathe in the warm waters from the plant’s cooling system.  I am not convinced that this is good for the environment, because it stops the manatees from swimming South for the winter, and they run out of food in the winter because they can’t forage like they would if they traveled South.

The power plant pretends that this safe haven for the manatees is one of the many positives to having a power plant in your backyard.  They also talk about the benefits of their coal power, and the fact that they create jobs.

Regardless of the environmental impact, I checked it out for myself and took some photos.  I will go again this winter with my newer camera.

  1. Very cool. Another great place for manatee watching is Blue Springs in Central Florida (near Deland) during the winter. The manatee go there for the relatively “warm” waters of the spring during the coldest months.

Hey, may I suggest you develop an identity for your blogging? That is, instead of using the faceless “admin” ID, either use your first name or make up a pen name. That way your readers could identify with you…know who you are.

A friend of mine from way back has a very successful blog (he actually makes his living from it!), and he says one of the most important things is to get readers to identify with you as a person.

  2. Norm. I agree with the alias idea. I don’t know for sure what to use though. I don’t want some lame gimmick that I would be embarassed of though. I also don’t want to put my real name on there. Any ideas.
